Capitalism has increasingly become the driving force behind how our society operates, often at the expense of the planet’s ecosystems. To capture this phenomenon, we propose a visual representation that reduces nations to their currencies, highlighting the most immediate casualty of this process: our oceans. In this reimagined world map, the absence of the seas causes the continents to collapse into a singular, unified mass- an abstract financial map of the New World. Ironically, this apocalyptic scenario - a reflection of our current trajectory - is handcrafted into a plush, comfortable rug designed for sitting. Partnering with Urban Fabric has been a great experience. It has given me an opportunity to explore this new medium with their expertise in rug making to guide the process. They were also motivated to explore designs that carried a message - like our ‘Financial Crush’ rug. This, along with their commitment to sustainability, provided the perfect platform for me to explore new dimensions of design.
